Remington Park Honors 25-Year Employee BJ Sexton

By  Avery Oden

There are few things in the world that fuel a sense of community quite like a shared passion.

And anybody who is familiar with the rich traditions of horse racing knows that horsemen are always defined by their passion for the track. For them, the track is more than a hobby, it’s more than an interest, and it’s far more than entertainment. It’s a community.

So today, Remington Park is proud to honor one of the most beloved pillars of the horseracing community: BJ Sexton.

Starting on the very first day that Remington Park opened its doors to the public twenty-five years ago in 1988, BJ has been serving cold beers, mixing cocktails, and offering friendly conversation with a warm smile consistently - every single year. This is no small achievement. And although she bartends at a bar called “Steine’s,” you would be hard pressed to hear anybody at Remington Park refer to it as anything other than “BJ’s”. After serving at Remington Park for 25 consecutive years, it’s no surprise why.

I sat down with BJ to ask a couple of questions and hear what a true Remington Park insider has to say:

How long have you worked here?

“This year will make 25 years.”

And you’ve come back to work every single year?

“That’s right.”

How did you begin your career at Remington Park?

“Well, I was bartending at a club in Oklahoma City, and I got scouted by the Assistant Food and Beverage director at the time.”

Why do choose to come back to Remington Park every year?

“It works well with my schedule. I get to spend time with my kids, and now my grandkids. Plus, it’s exciting! We have some of the greatest horses in the world, Quarter horses and Thoroughbreds, and with those great horses we have great trainers, owners, jockeys, and breeders. And I just love the people here.”

So what do you enjoy about this job?

“I love the people - the ones that return year after year, as well as the newcomers. I love the horses. I enjoy the big races, the little races. I like that the people know me here. And you just don’t get a lot of negative people here... You really don’t.”

So there you have it. If you haven’t been by BJ’s (aka Steine’s Bar), come by soon and meet this Remington Park icon! Be a part of this beloved tradition at Remington Park: Come to BJ’s for a drink, and stay for the conversation.

So here’s to BJ, a true pillar of Remington Park’s horse racing community.

Cheers!
