Cliff Berry's 4,000 Wins

                                         By Avery Oden

Veteran jockey Cliff Berry is getting ready to win his 4,000th thoroughbred race here at Remington Park. Cliff is Remington Park’s all-time leading jockey and has been here for every season since the track began racing in 1988.

Depending on when you read this, he’s somewhere around 5 - 10 wins away.

When he does it, he’ll be only one of 65 jockeys to reach the achievement in the long history of the sport of horse racing.

But if you’re anything like me, you’re struggling to imagine the staggering reality of 4,000 wins. Just 100 seems impressive.

So to help wrap your head around the magnitude of this victory, here’s some alternative perspectives on the number 4,000:

  • 4,000 years ago, the first love song ever written was composed and the first shoes were crafted from a single piece of rawhide.
  • There are 4,000 species of bees in North America, Australia has 4,000 species of ants, and the world has 4,000 species of cockroaches.
  • 4,000 pounds of popcorn were served at the superbowl this year
  • Living for up to 4,000 years, California Bristlecone Pines and Giant Sequoias are regarded as the oldest trees in the world.
  • There are 600 million stars within a 4,000 light year range of Earth.
  • Old Faithful expels 4,000 gallons of boiling water up into the air during every eruption.
  • Lasting for over 4,000 years now, China is the oldest civilization on Earth.
  • NASA’s pioneering high-speed aircraft, the X-15, traveled at 4,000 mph when Neil Armstrong first tested it.
  • In order to take off, jumbo jets burn 4,000 gallons of fuel.
  • A modern glass bottle takes 4,000 years to decompose naturally.
  • The first recorded New Year's celebration dates back 4,000 years to Babylon.

All of us here at Remington Park would like to offer Cliff Berry an enthusiastic and heartfelt congratulations.

This level of dedication, focus, and success takes far more than what an average man can undertake. Cliff truly is a remarkable individual with a heck of a legacy, but I have a feeing he’s just getting started.
